BACKPACKING AUSTRALIA TIPS

Here are some useful tips for your backpacking trip to Australia.

Including the best time to visit Australia, where to start backpacking in Australia, backpacking the east coast, packing tips and more!

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT AUSTRALIA?

Summer in Australia (Dec-Feb) is hot, especially up north, where it can get too hot. And winter in Australia (Jun-Aug) is pretty mild, apart from down south where it does get cold. If you're taking a short holiday in Australia then we recommend you go between September and May. But if you're going to be backpacking in Australia for more than a few months then it doesn't really matter when you go as you can plan your travels to avoid the extreme heat and the cold.

WHERE TO START BACKPACKING IN AUSTRALIA

Most flights will arrive in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne or Perth. We recommend booking a flight that arrives in Sydney because it's a fantastic city, with lots to do, plenty of jobs and is the prefect place to start travelling around Australia from.

Most people that go backpacking in Australia will arrive in Sydney then head off travelling up the east coast.

BACKPACKING THE EAST COAST OF AUSTRALIA

Almost everyone that goes backpacking in Australia will travel along the east coast. This is because there are so many amazing experiences to have, there are plenty of great hostels to stay in, plenty of opportunities to find work and you can book a hop-on hop-off bus pass that allows you to travel between Sydney and Cairns for up to 6 months.

PACKING TIPS

The best packing tip we can give you is.. pack light! Dragging a 30kg suitcase around Australia isn't fun. Roll your clothes tightly instead of folding them. Don't pack huge bottles of shampoo or body wash, take small travel sized ones. Don't put your laptop in your checked in luggage. Bring ear plugs or noise cancelling headphones for the flight. Bring a cloth tote bag with you. And don't pack more than 3 pairs of shoes!
