With so many amazing places to go and incredible things to do when you're backpacking in Australia it wasn't easy deciding on the top 20.

 

We've put together a list that will take you from big cities to beaches, rainforests, the outback, tropical islands and small country towns. And if you're lucky enough and get to experience even half of the things on this list you'll have the most unforgettable experience on your backpacking adventure in Oz!

1. SAIL AROUND THE

WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS

Made up of 74 beautiful tropical islands in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays is absolute paradise!

And you can do a sailing trip, where you'll spend time on the world-famous sands of Whitehaven Beach, snorkel on colourful reefs teeming with ocean life, and relax on the boat where you can work on your tan.

2. DO A 4WD SAFARI

ON FRASER ISLAND

Fraser Island is famous for awesome beaches, beautiful swimming spots, lush rainforests, colourful cliffs, an epic shipwreck and the pristine freshwater Lake Mckenzie. Oh, and some cheeky dingos.

You can take a 3-day tour and explore the island by 4WD with a group and have an experience you'll never forget.

3. EXPERIENCE THE MAGICAL RED CENTRE

With endless desert stretching on forever, martian landscapes, the most incredible night sky you will ever see and the iconic Uluru, the Red Centre is a place like nowhere else on earth!

Spend a few days here and you'll discover just how awe-inspiring this place is, whilst also learning about the magical and quite spiritual Aboriginal people and their history and culture.

4. DIVE OR SNORKEL AT THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

It’s big enough to be seen from space but to truly appreciate it it needs to be seen up close. A natural wonder of the world, this living entity is treasured for the diversity of marine life it is home to, and its importance to the overall ocean ecosystem. If you are looking to get up close to whales, sea turtles and countless species of fish, there’s no better place to do it than the Great Barrier Reef.
